“Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counsellors, and the most patient of teachers.”
- Charles W. Eliot
“Everybody needs a break, everybody deserves that second chance. Bob and I had taken ours.”
- James Bowen
In this story, the two main characters are James Bowen, a London street musician, and a London street cat Bob. They were homeless and lonely, but one day they met each other ...
James suffered from drugs and despair, there was no meaning in his life until a four-legged friend appeared in it, who helped him cope with problems, brought good luck and became a real guardian angel. Now Bob and James are well known not only by the residents of London, who meet them on the streets, in the subway and cafes, but hundreds of thousands of people around the world.
This wonderful book tells the story of a man and his furry friend, who found themselves on the street but found the strength to support each other. James is aware and grateful to his red-haired friend for the sense of hope that the cat has brought into his life. Despite the title, this book is not only about the cat, but also about James, who tells about how he came to street life, how he tried to get rid of drug addiction, about how hard it was for him to live on the street. This story tells us that faith and love save us, and hope gives us strength to live.
This is the most life-affirming book read in recent times. Enjoy this true story!
“How good one feels when one is full - how satisfied with ourselves and with the world! People who have tried it, tell me that a clear conscience makes you very happy and contented; but a full stomach does the business quite as well, and is cheaper, and more easily obtained.”
- Jerome K. Jerome
This is an English classic with a characteristic sense of humour. One of my favourite books! This is a story about how three friends and a dog decided to arrange a boat swim on the River Thames. This is the main river of Great Britain, which is associated with many cultural and historical events.
Amusing misunderstandings, funny collisions and comic situations that heroes come out of, invariably preserving a truly British sense of self-esteem, still amaze today with their originality and unfading humour. This is an amazingly good and funny story. There is very subtle and intriguing humour. Reading this book lifts my mood and leaves me feeling warm in my soul.
I recommend this work and generally recommend reading, because it brings so many positive emotions, makes you think and reason!!!
“The purr is very important. It's the purr that does it every time. It's the purr that makes up for the Things Under the Bed, the occasional pungency, the 4 a.m. yowl. Other creatures went in for big teeth, long legs or over-active brains, while cats just settled for a noise that tells the world they're feeling happy.”
- Terry Pratchett
The book is for cat lovers! This is an easy, simple, funny book for pleasant evenings. I studied the types of cats with the author, trying on his words on my furry friend, who is sleeping on my lap. I liked the easy syllable, charming descriptions, unobtrusive humour.
Terry Pratchett will answer a lot of questions about cats. What name should a cat have, what should a real cat be and what should it eat, do you need selection of cats, where did the cats come from, how to become a catman, what kind of cats are there, what dangers do cats face, what games do they play and some other questions.
The whole book contains a lot of humor. Almost the entire text is full of funny moments that will make you smile. At least it was with me. Pratchett definitely evokes sympathy and requires additional attention to his works.
“Everyone has secrets. It's just a matter of finding out what they are.” - Stieg Larsson
This is a tense, smart thriller with an ingenious plot. The main idea is to make the reader take a different look at asocial people and, on the whole, to give thought to how erroneous the first impressions of people are. The book literally describes every gloomy detail, the world of vice, the disturbed psyche and deformation of the human soul.
The author very slowly tells the reader his story, creating the effect of complete immersion in the smallest details. All characters are spelled with such precision that it seems that you see them and are always there. Almost all characters are ordinary people.
The finale of the novel is rather difficult, leaves a hint of bitterness and disappointment, but, of course, does not leave you indifferent. This book caused me a sea of emotions: from laughter and tenderness to disgust and hatred. Despite all the gloom and “heaviness” of the book, I wanted to read the rest of the trilogy.
“Sixteen years on the streets and you can learn a lot. But all the wrong things, not the things you want to learn. Sixteen years on the streets and you see a lot. But all the wrong sights, not the sights you want to see.” Hinton “The Outsiders”
This is a book about a group of teenage boys living in Oklahoma, and about their struggles to exist in a society. The author created a believable and engaging cast of characters who struggle with conflict in and out of their gang and learn the meaning of friendship and family.
You definitely need to read this book because it’s a great book which teaches an important lesson and I can recommend it to everyone. This book will make you think and feel and it will continue to do so even after you finished reading the last page.
“The mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one.”- J.D. Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye
This book tells about the life of a teenager who does not want to put up with the rules of school and life. An important point in the description of the book: the novel is written in simple and easy language, which everyone can understand. The text often contains colloquial vocabulary and laconic words characteristic of youth. The book of J. Salinger is considered a cult not only in the English-speaking world. It is translated, read and re-read so far throughout the world. Moreover, you can read this novel at any age: it will tell one thing to teenagers, and another thing to adults.
I believe that each of us should read this book in order to plunge into the world of thoughts, in order to understand and feel the transience of our lives, in order to make the right choice and learn to appreciate the present.
“So, this is my life. And I want you to know that I am both happy and sad and I'm still trying to figure out how that could be.” The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky
I really liked this touching novel about a young guy named Charlie, who is having difficulty in growing up. He wants to better understand his family, his friends, and the general society around him: he wants to know why people do the things that they do, and he wants to understand the sides of these individuals that they choose not to show to the public. Most importantly, he wants to understand himself. Each of us experiences difficulties in life, but not everyone can cope with them, fight and move on.
Books such as this one allow us all to understand how teenagers feel in their nasty stage of growing up.
“The fewer one's comforts, the fewer one's needs; and the fewer one's needs, the greater one's happiness.” - Jules Verne
"Children of Captain Grant" - is one of the most brilliant works of the author, which was interesting to read. This amazing work impressed me with its deep well thought of every detail, the story and each character. All the adventures of the main characters and their travels, as set out in the book, are described very fascinatingly and based on a riddle. It is this mystery that we are trying to solve throughout the entire work. The book describes various natural landscapes: deserts and steppes, snowy mountain peaks and giant cracks, picturesque waterfalls, calm rivers, and swamps. A special place in the story is occupied by natural phenomena such as tropical rainfall, floods, landslides, avalanches, volcanic eruptions. But at the most important place, of course, heroes who, in spite of all obstacles, continue their journey in search of the brave captain Grant, who suffers shipwreck near the island of Tabor.
“When I am king they shall not have bread and shelter only, but also teachings out of books, for a full belly is little worth where the mind is starved.” - Mark Twain, The Prince and the Pauper
This story tells about two boys born in London on the same day: Edward, Prince of Wales and Tom Canty, a street beggar. Edward was born in the royal family and everyone was waiting for his birth. Tom was born in a poor family and was destined to know all the burdens of poor life. Once, two children met and found that they were very similar to each other. From that moment on, their lives changed abruptly and their difficult adventures began. Starting to read this story, you will find yourself in an incredible and wonderful world, ruled by kings. I like how Mark Twain accurately and colorfully describes all the historical details - traditions, churches, castles, even clothing and laws. This story is about how two boys from different walks of life swapped places. Prince Edward Tudor and Tom Kenti were so similar that they could not be distinguished. Each of the boys is waiting for an incredible adventure. First, the guys are having fun and enjoying unfamiliar sensations. But then each of them understands how difficult life is often. I really like this story. This is probably the best book by Mark Twain.
“People generally see what they look for, and hear what they listen for.” - Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird
This story is filled with deep morality, bright humour, and most importantly - the hope that times change. Everyone needs to read this to understand and feel the spirit of that era. The main characters of this story go through a war - a war with society, with prejudices, with their own character. This story is about tolerance and prejudice, the story of how people can make mistakes in their judgments. Describing the world through the eyes of a little girl, the author forces to take a fresh look at many things.
“No matter how hard you try to be what you once were, you can only be what you are here and now.” - Ray Bradbury, Dandelion Wine
This is one of the most wonderful books I have read. The book is filled with smells, sounds and feelings. I will reread it more than once, I'm sure. It is a very kind and sunny story, sunk into my heart and has become one of my favourite ones. The book tells about one wonderful summer, through the eyes of two brothers who live in a small town. The book's narration is so bright, warm, and sunny — like that dandelion wine. Closing the book, I looked with a smile somewhere in space, into the distance, and the world seemed completely different to me.
"You're either my ship's cook-and then you were treated handsome-or Cap'n Silver, a common mutineer and pirate, and then you can go hang!" - Robert Louis Stevenson, Treasure Island
The famous novel by Robert Louis Stevenson tells of the exciting and dangerous adventures of the young Jim and his older comrades who went in search of a pirate treasure. I really liked this novel. This is so realistic that it just took breath away when reading. I really felt the sound of the wind, the salt spray on my face, Jim's fear when dealing with Billy Bons and Blind Pew.
“I do not wish any reward but to know I have done the right thing.” - Mark Twain, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
This is my favourite book. Huckleberry Finn is a boy who always finds a way out of difficult situations. Finn's life philosophy is quite simple. This is freedom and adventure. We should learn the kindness and sincerity from this guy.
"This ring is a symbol of my faithfulness, it binds you to me, and my love shall hold you always." - Melissa de la Cruz, "Bloody Valentine".
This is an incredible and romantic story that fascinates from the first minutes of reading. You will never forget this book. Passion and suffering, hope and defeat fill the hearts of the protagonists of this beautiful vampire novel. The glitter and glamour of the representatives of nightlife are covered with a veil of deception and defeat.
